NET-ZERO GOALS

In December 2021, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission established net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions goals for government operations by 2040 and for the community by 2050. This builds on the City’s previous goals for GHG reductions of in the Sustainability Action Plan and in the Advance Fort Lauderdale 2040 Comprehensive Plan. As a city on the front lines of the climate change, it is imperative that the City of Fort Lauderdale join communities across the globe in the effort to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions and lessen those impacts.  Therefore, Fort Lauderdale is honored to joined Florida’s Race to Zero to demonstrate our commitment to this effort.

The Sustainability Division implements the Citywide Sustainability Action Plan and works to enhance City operations by optimizing conservation efforts. This division ensures that the City's sustainability practices maintain an ecological balance in ways that benefit the entire community. Sustainability Division is organized into five programs

Sustainability and Climate Resilience

Adopt a tree, optimize your energy usage, eliminate single-use consumption, conserve precious water resources.

Environmental and Regulatory Affairs

Pursuit of environmental sustainability is paramount to ensuring our world remains the rare gem we enjoy today.

Solid Waste and Recycling

Our mission is to adopt more convenient, environmentally friendly solutions to keep Fort Lauderdale clean.

Fleet Services

Functional, dependable, and economical vehicles necessary for the conduct of the City’s operations.

Stormwater Operations

A dedicated operational focus to maintaining and improving the City’s stormwater infrastructure.


Sustainability Advisory Board

The purpose of Sustainability Advisory Board is to identify and recommend affordable strategies to the City Commission associated with conservation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency to establish the City of Fort Lauderdale as a leader in environmental sustainability.
