Attention, City of Fort Lauderdale residents! We have an important announcement regarding your water and wastewater rates. Starting in FY24 (October 1, 2023), a series of incremental increases will be needed to support the construction of a state-of-the-art water treatment facility.

In February, the City Commission approved the construction of the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center. This facility will replace the aging Fiveash water treatment facility, significantly enhancing the water service provided by the City of Fort Lauderdale to our residents. This cutting-edge facility is being built to ensure you receive the highest quality water, meeting rigorous standards for cleanliness and clarity. Investing in this state-of-the-art infrastructure will provide long-term benefits to the entire community.

By the Numbers

Over the next few years, the City of Fort Lauderdale residents will experience a gradual increase in water and wastewater rates. In FY24, the combined water and wastewater rates will rise by 14%, followed by an additional 14.4% increase in FY25. The subsequent years will see more modest adjustments, with a 9% increase in FY 26 and 6.7% increase in FY 27.

Public Hearings on these increases will be held on September 5 and 13, 2023.

Added Benefits for You

These rate adjustments will bring you clean, clear water and introduce modern technology to help you monitor and manage your water usage effectively.

You will gain access to advanced automated water meter technology. This exciting development empowers residents to monitor their water usage in real-time, enabling better control and conservation. By closely monitoring your water consumption, you can make informed decisions about usage patterns, potentially saving both water and money.

One of the most valuable features of automated water meter technology is its ability to detect leaks promptly. In the event of a leak, you will receive immediate notifications, allowing you to take swift action and mitigate any potential damage, ultimately saving you from unexpected expenses.

These technological advancements will empower you to make smarter decisions about water usage while promoting a more sustainable future for the community.

Understanding Your Water Bill

When reviewing your water bills and projecting future costs, it's important to remember that the bill also includes sanitation charges. While water and wastewater rates will increase, as mentioned earlier, sanitation charges will not rise at the same rate. By factoring this into your calculations, you can accurately estimate your bills in the coming years.

Using the sample bill HERE, you can see what a typical family using 5,000 gallons of water per month pays today. Compare that in the chart below to what that bill will look like in the coming years.
