The Organizational Development &Learning (ODL) team is responsible for assessing, designing, and implementing learning resources,  and supporting organizational development initiatives to further the mission of the City of Fort Lauderdale.  The team supports leadership throughout the City with efforts to build a values-based organization committed to developing and retaining qualified employees. The City is always excited to have great talent join the organization and ODL facilitates the City’s comprehensive orientation for all new full-time employees.  New Employee Orientation provides an overview of key functions throughout the organization and other important information such as employee benefits.

To fit the needs of a multi-dimensional workforce, ODL develops and facilitates professional development opportunities that are diverse in scope and accessibility which include experiential workshops, traditional instructor-led classes, micro-learning, cohort programs, on-demand learning tools, a prolific virtual library of learning solutions, and other customized resources. The City also encourages continued learning through degree or certification programs and offers an approval process for tuition reimbursement.

ODL provides customized support for managers and supervisors looking to empower staff, for executive leadership as a team, and for employees striving to meet performance goals.  At their core, all resources are designed to:

  • help employees prepare for career growth within the organization
  • focus on competencies that support employee’s ability to contribute to process improvement in their respective work areas
  • cultivate a learning environment where knowledge and continual improvement are valued
  • improve employee performance and reduce barriers to productivity
  • support critical thinking in decision making as it relates to core processes within the organization

Resources must meet high quality standards and incorporate the organizations three cornerstones for leaning and development.  Resources should be:

  • Relevant (useful to the audience and supportive of an operational goal)
  • Engaging (interactive and inclusive of effective elements for all learners)
  • Progressive (substantially memorable to successfully influence future behavior or critical thinking)

On-Boarding

Through our On-Boarding process, we ensure that employees are engaged early and often and get the support they need to quickly learn the operation of the City.  Our On-Boarding does not end at New Employee Orientation - we continually seek opportunities to help new employees feel welcomed, engaged, and part of the City of Fort Lauderdale.
