The City of Fort Lauderdale Firefighter Paramedics are responsible for the protection and preservation of life and property by responding to emergencies and through the performance of firefighting/rescue tasks and providing emergency medical care. Work often requires the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion, heat, noxious smoke, zero visibility and mental concentration.

Here’s a quick reference guide detailing the minimum requirements and documentation:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Been a non-smoker/non-user of tobacco (any form) for at least one (1) year prior to application, remain smoke free during application process, and agree not to smoke or use tobacco (in any form) on or off duty during the tenure of their employment
  3. Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to the certification or to perjury or false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more under the law of the United States or of any state thereof or under the law of any other country…“Convicted” means a finding of guilt or the acceptance of a plea of guilty or nolo contendere, in any federal or state court or a court in any other country, without regard to whether a judgment of conviction has been entered by the court having jurisdiction of the case (Florida Statues 633.412)
  4. Not have been dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States (Florida Statues 633.412)
  5. Broward College administered Water Survival Exercise (Swim Test)
  6. Complete Work History – your work history must include all positions held since the age of 18 to present

    REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

    2. High School Diploma or GED
    3. Current Driver's License History
    4. Driver's License
    5. State of Florida Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training for Firefighters
    6. State of Florida Paramedic License
    7. American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certificate or Equivalent (both sides)
    8. Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate (EVOC) - Minimum 16-Hour Course
    9. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Card - CPR & AED (both sides)
    10. Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) Card from National Testing Network (not needed at time of application)
    11. Swim Card from Broward College (not needed at time of application)
    12. Fire Rescue Tobacco Waiver
    13. Fire Rescue Waiver of Confidential Records
    14. DD214 Military Release Form - Member 4 Copy (if applicable)
    15. City of Fort Lauderdale Veteran's Preference Claim Form (if applicable) (Form J204)
    16. Court Disposition (if applicable
