1. General Information:

a) Full legal name - Lauderdale Isles Water Management District

b) Public Purpose - To protect and improve the water quality of the  (10) canals and section of the North New River Canal within Lauderdale Isles, by addressing aquatic vegetation control, safe navigation,  consumption of fish and blue crabs, canal depths & obstructions, canal debris, waterway cleanup, education, derelict boats, dilapidated docks, manatee protection, nuisance alligator control, waterway safety, saltwater intrusion, pollution control, storm water control, after-storm cleanup, any and all other matters pertaining to water quality protection and improvement, and all other matters as described and/or required by law

d) Services provided - Aquatic weed monitoring and control; monitoring of pollution sources including vessel oil spills, vessel holding tanks, runoff,  debris by lawn service companies, monitoring of hazards to navigation including dilapidated docks & derelict vessels, monitoring of water quality & testing, waterway cleanup sponsorship, public outreach and education by quarterly updates, including awareness of nuisance alligators & manatee regulations; monitoring of fish & blue crabs for consumption; canal dredging;  Coordinating services provided by Departments of the City, including Canal Cleaning, Code Enforcement, Environmental Services, Engineering, & Law Enforcement, appropriate departments at Broward County, and the State of Florida, including the Department of Environmental Protection

e) Established by the Broward County Board of Commissioners on November 17, 1970, pursuant to Chapter 61-1969, Laws of Florida, Special Acts of 1961, as amended by Chapter 63-1168, Laws of Florida, Special Acts of 1963, as amended by Chapter 65-1337, Laws of Florida, Special Acts of 1965

i) The Lauderdale Isles Water Management District operates under the authority of Florida Statute 298, “Drainage and Water Control,” and Chapter 189, “Special Districts”. While in unincorporated Broward County, the District operated as a Dependent Special District within the County.  Upon the annexation of Lauderdale Isles in 2002, The Lauderdale Isles Water Management District was transferred to the jurisdiction of the City of Fort Lauderdale in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 78-482, by County Resolution 2003-483 and City Resolution 02-28 and September 15, 2002 Riverland Area Annexation Agreement, as a dependent special district within the City
