Melissa Mata
First-Year Senior Management Fellow

Hometown: San Luis, Arizona

Education: BA in Public Management, Criminal Justice Studies and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Arizona.

Why you chose the fellowship: I chose the Fellowship with the City to understand the economic growth of a fast-growing city from the lens of local government. Coming from a small border town, I was always intrigued in understanding the distribution of funds in capital projects and the formation of programs that assists in improving economic vitality. Now as a fellow, I'm able to gain insight of the functions of different departments by working alongside various managers and city residents.

What have you been working on?: Currently, I have been working closely with the City Manager's Office under the Public Affairs Division. I have been able to learn in depth the different branches that hold together the Public Affairs Division. I have been able to represent the City through various City events and provide input in building strategies to better represent city residents and city departments.

Favorite Fort Lauderdale experience so far: Definitely being able to work with the Public Affairs Division. I am beyond grateful to be able to work with such an amazing team that has made this experience very welcoming and filles with learning opportunities.
