Protecting Yourself from Pickpocketing/Theft

Overview:

In light of recent incidents involving pickpocketing and the theft of high-value items such as Rolex watches, it is important to remain vigilant and take protective measures to safeguard your belongings.

Common Tactics used by Thieves:

  1. Distraction: Thieves may work in pairs or groups to distract you while another person steals your belongings.
  2. Crowded Areas: Busy locations are prime areas for pickpockets.
  3. Bumping or Jostling: Thieves might deliberately bump into you to create an opportunity to steal items from your pockets or bag.

Preventative Measures:

  1. Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas.
  2. Secure Your Belongings: Use bags with locking zippers and keep them close to your body. Avoid placing valuable items in easily accessible pockets.
  3. Conceal High-Value Items: If you own an expensive watch like a Rolex, consider leaving it at home or wearing it discreetly by covering it with a sleeve.
  4. Avoid Displaying Wealth: Minimize wearing or showing off expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash in public
  5. Be cautious of Strangers: Be wary of strangers who engage you in conversation as they may be trying to distract you.

Remember: Staying vigilant and taking precautionary measures can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to a pickpocketing and theft. Your safety and the security of your belongings are paramount.

LOST CHILD REUNIFICATION: For those bringing children, FLPD will have a tent set up near Bo’s Beach restaurant and officers will be issuing wristbands for your children to wear. This tent will also serve as the reunification center for any lost children.
