Per Chapter 27 of the City of Fort Lauderdale Code of Ordinances, permits are required for businesses providing Vehicle for Hire services such as chauffeurs and vehicles such as taxicabs, golf cart transportation services, limousines, passenger motor carriers (including jitneys and tour vans), special transportation service vehicles, non-emergency transportation services and ambulance services.

Vehicle For Hire companies must start the process at the Transportation and Mobility Department:

  • Complete the application submit to the Transportation and Mobility Department with the application fee.
  • Application must be complete with all information requested.
    • Include a detailed route map, descriptive narrative of the route including start, end and turn around points,
    • A vehicle description with pictures and manufacturer’s specifications.
    • A detailed description of the service provided.
  • Applicant must provide proof of current Broward County business license.
  • A copy of the Broward County vehicle inspection must also be included with the application.
  • Application will be reviewed by a Transportation Engineer, Fort Lauderdale Police Department, City Attorney’s Office and the City Commission.

All new Vehicle for Hire applicants must be approved by City Commission for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity before they are permitted to purchase permits. All certificate and permit holders are required to submit renewal application by September 30th each year to maintain compliance and certification status. 


 Application Fees:

  • Taxi Cabs:
    • New Application: $151.00
    • Renewal Application: $100.00
    • Permit Fee (per vehicle): $65.10
  • Motel/Hotel Courtesy Vehicle:
    • No Application Fee Required
    • Permit fee (per vehicle for up to 5 passengers): $32.50
    • Permit fee (per vehicle for over 5 passengers): $45.15
  •  Rental Cars with Chauffeurs/Sightseeing Vehicles/Golf Cart Transport/Non-emergency Ambulance Services:
    •  No Application Fee Required
    • Permit Fees (per vehicle)
      •  Up to 5 passengers: $32.55
      • 6 - 9 passengers: $45.15
      • 10 or more passengers: $125.00
      • 15 or more passengers: $131.25
      • Franchise bus (per bus): $105.00
  • Non-motorized vehicle:
    •  New Application: $150.00
    • Renewal Application: $150.00
    • Permit fee (per vehicle): $5.00
    • Permit replacement fee: $10.00
  • Non-motorized, self-propelled vehicle:
    •  New Application: $100.00
    • Renewal Application: $100.00
    • No permit fee
