Because the City of Fort Lauderdale doesn't own, operate, or maintain every road within its jurisdictions, it's important that city staff coordinates with planning efforts at our partner agencies such as the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4, Broward County, Broward County Transit, and the South Florida Regional Transit Agency (SFRTA). Pedestrian and Vehicular Safety Project - NE 3 Ave at FEC Railway Crossing

In an effort to enhance pedestrian and vehicular safety along NE 3 Avenue at the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway Crossing, Broward County's Traffic Engineering Department, FEC Railway, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's Transportation and Mobility Department are collaborating to reconfigure the roadway design.

I-595 Express consist of tolled, reversible express lanes, located in the existing median of I-595. These lanes will give motorists the ability to choose a reliable long-distance travel option when their time is more valuable than the toll being charged. The reversible lanes operate as managed lanes with variable tolls. In order to manage the flow of traffic, these lanes are tolled at varying rates throughout the day with higher toll rates during peak traffic periods.

595 Express operates:

• In the eastbound direction in the mornings
• In the westbound direction in the afternoons

To maximize the operational efficiency of 595 Express, vehicles enter and exit from exchange areas in the medians of I-595 and Florida’s Turnpike at the following locations:

• The western location -- between I-75 and Flamingo Road, serving I-75 and the Sawgrass Expressway.
• The eastern location -- between Florida’s Turnpike and State Road 7, serving points east of State Road 7, including I-95.
• Access to/from Florida's Turnpike, serving the express lanes west of the Turnpike interchange, is provided by ramps connecting to the Turnpike between Griffin Road and Peters Road. 

Managed lanes are being constructed along Interstate 95 in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. These lanes will allow commuters to travel in a separate lane much like a high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane operates, but the number of occupants inside the vehicle is not restricted. Instead, there is a toll for using the express lane. Tolls are collected electronically via SunPass Prepaid Toll Program and are based on the level of traffic on the roadway. Hybrid and registered carpool vehicle owners may register with South Florida Commuter Services.

Construction on Phase 2 of 95 Express is in the process and will extend the existing express lanes north from the Golden Glades Interchange in Miami-Dade County to Broward Boulevard in Broward County by converting the existing HOV lanes to two express lanes in each direction. Other work includes installing Intelligent Transportation System components, modifying the Ives Dairy Road interchange, bridge widening at specific locations and installing new noise walls at locations between Hollywood Boulevard and Taft Street.

The purpose of the A1A Scenic Byway / Barrier Islands Greenway is to establish this corridor as one of the most desirable recreation corridors in Broward County. Continuous multipurpose paths along the beach, the A1A roadway itself, and various neighborhood streets will link public beaches, resorts, waterside communities, activity centers, marinas, restaurants, municipal centers, and other attractions. Through the use of the appropriate signs and other markers, the A1A Scenic Byway / Barrier Islands Greenway has the potential to be the premier attraction in South Florida, further enhancing the unique sense of place along the corridor, as well as serve as an asset to each local neighborhood.

Florida Department of Transportation District Four is conducting a PD&E Study at the SR 9/I-95 at SR 842/Broward Boulevard Interchange. The project area extends along SR 9/I-95 from south of Davie Boulevard to south of Sunrise Boulevard and on Broward Boulevard from west of SW 24 Avenue to east of NW/SW 18 Avenue. This study will develop three viable alternatives and alignments to increase the level of service of the interchange and adjacent intersections, enhance system linkage and modal interrelationships at I-95 and Broward Boulevard, reduce congestion, and increase safety at the interchange through the 2040 design year horizon. The study will be compatible with the 95 Express Lane Improvements Phase 3 and will evaluate comprehensive improvements to the surrounding multimodal facilities.

The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (Broward MPO) developed a Complete Streets Master Plan to guide future investments by creating a prioritized list of projects based on technical, data-driven analysis and community input.

The goal of the Central Broward East-West Transit Study is to connect the western portions of Broward County with downtown Fort Lauderdale and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport using premium transit service. Additionally, the study will support the region's economic development goals and local land-use plans to improve transit choices that appeal to a larger population.

Study Area:

The corridor boundaries of the study area are in central Broward County, located between Oakland Park Boulevard in the north, the Weston-Sawgrass area in the west, Griffin Road/Stirling Road in the south, and the Intracoastal Waterway in the east. The Broward MPO selected the Griffin Road Alternative as the Locally Preferred Alternative for further study and evaluation, which is currently underway.

The Broward MPO has kicked off Commitment 2045, the MPO’s Metropolitan Transportation Plan for Broward (MTP), formerly known as the Long Range Transportation Plan. The MTP is an investment plan for Broward County’s transportation system that allocates available federal, state, and local funds to maintain and improve the transportation system in the region now and in the future. The Plan is also one of the MPO's core products and lays out a vision for the next five years and through 2045.

The City of Fort Lauderdale and the Broward MPO are initiating a process to designate several railroad crossings along the Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway corridor as Quiet Zones to improve the quality of life for our neighbors. 

A Quiet Zone is a section of railroad track at least one-half mile long that includes one or more consecutive public highway railroad crossings where train horns are not sounded upon the train’s approach, except in emergency situations at the conductor’s discretion.

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) includes a series of operational and physical changes that help students walk and bicycle to and from schools. Traffic calming measures are routinely employed with other strategies and changes to create safer walking and bicycling routes to school by slowing traffic.

Broward County Transit is launching the start of this project which will result in a 10-year transit development plan, commonly known as BCT Connected. This plan will assess the current transit system, evaluate existing and future needs, prioritize future projects and services, and create a vision for transit in Broward County.

The proposed Tri-Rail Coastal Link is a plan to expand commuter passenger train service connecting Miami to Jupiter along 85 miles of Florida East Coast Railway. Tri-Rail currently runs along the CSX; however, the new service will run through the downtown areas of 28 densely-populated municipalities in eastern Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties to augment existing service.
