The City of Fort Lauderdale participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The NFIP was created by Congress in 1968 to protect lives and property and to reduce the financial burden of providing disaster assistance. The NFIP is based on a mutual agreement between the Federal Government and communities. Communities agree to regulate floodplain development through the adoption and enforcement of floodplain management regulations.

The Building Services Division coordinates the City of Fort Lauderdale's participation in the NFIP and provides technical assistance to property owners and other interested parties on issues such as floodplain mapping, floodplain management regulations, flood insurance and flood mitigation.
