Our dedicated paramedics respond, using Advanced Life Support (ALS) capabilities, to over 54,000 calls per year
(FY 2023) to protect our residents and visitors in Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, and Lazy Lake.
We never underestimate the value of human life and the well-being of those we serve.
The EMS Bureau supports all paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) with advanced technology, state of the art training, and administrative details. Fort Lauderdale operates 17 Medical Rescue Units (MRUs) along with 15 ALS fire suppression engines/ladders staffed with firefighter paramedics/EMT.
Our Medical Director signs off on each paramedic. Paramedics receive annual training to include Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Pediatrics. FLFR paramedics and EMTs are regularly recognized and have received multiple awards for their excellence in providing care and treatment to our patients.(To the right, a thankful cardiac survivor with FS 13.)
The EMS Bureau works with Ocean Rescue to provide medical training and equipment to the Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue EMTs and Paramedics. Assistant Chief Lesly St. Fleur is responsible for daily operations of the EMS Bureau and the newly launched M.O.O.R.E. Team. Areas are inclusive of EMS training, quality assurance, medical equipment and supplies, and research.
The EMS Battalion Chief manages Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Health & Safety Committee, while EMS Lieutenant Silk and Lieutenant Waskowiak support operations that include controlled substance distribution, State EMS aggregate reports, EMT/paramedic re-certification, EMS research and membership to external agencies.
Paramedics provide treatment based on established medical protocols, authored jointly by our medical director Dr. James Roach and by members of the EMS protocol committee.
