USLA test Ocean Rescue

General Information: 

Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue will be conducting a physical performance examination for employment opportunities as a part-time beach lifeguard.

The Physical Examination will be held in September with an anticipated start date in November 2024. Email OceanRescueCertificates@fortlauderdale.gov for more information.

Physical Performance Exam:

This test is a highly competitive event in a Pass/Fail format. Candidates will have to pass one section to move on to the next.

  • 500-meter open water swim in 10 minutes or less
  • Simulated rescue of an unconscious victim 50 yards from shore in under 5 minutes (breakdown as follows: 200 meter run and swim to victim, secure in rfd in 2 minutes or less, bring to shore and prepare for CPR in 3 minutes or less)
  • Spinal immobilization in the surf zone
  • CPR (Adult, Child & Infant)
  • Questionnaire to be filled out by applicant after test completion


Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue requires lifeguards to undergo a rigorous annual in-service training curriculum and schedule that meets and/or exceeds the United States Lifesaving Association’s requirement for Agency Certification.

This includes the following requirements:ramp

  • All lifeguards to receive at least 40 hours of supervised open-water lifesaving training and preventive lifeguard skills.
  • Every six months, skills testing in CPR, and 500 meter swim in under 10 minutes.
  • Requiring daily physical training of between 30 to 45 minutes, in the morning, for swimming, running, paddleboard training, weight training, and medical training.
  • Minimum credentials as Emergency Medical Responders; most have earned Emergency Medical Technician certification and some have a Paramedic certification.
  • Meeting all standards for Emergency Medical Technician for the state of Florida

After test is completed, applicants must apply online and submit certifications to Ocean Rescue via email (OceanRescueCertificates@FortLauderdale.gov) . Scan QR code to Job Post and application.

Required Certifications to tryout:

  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (AHA or ARC)

Preferred Certifications:

  • Emergency Medical Responder (ARC), EMT or Paramedic
  • Surf Lifesaving (USLA)

In-house EMR and Surf Lifesaving Academy offered to applicants who successfully complete the test.

Training in Basic Life Support and/or encouraging training in Advanced Life Support in the marine environment in conjunction with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
